Day Four - Life in Nogales - July 1, 2010

Today we woke up from Alma Rosa’s house and we had eggs and beans and tortillas. AMAZING! (A couple of us tried to make some tortillas but it didn’t work out so well). After breakfast we went to la hoger for one more day of kid’s camp. We split into groups and went to the different sections (music, sports, bingo etc…). Sarah and I went to music first. I played the drums while she played the guitar. We rocked and even taught the kids some songs in English. Then we went to bingo, sports and then we watched a movie (ice age 3). After the kid’s camp was done we all took a picture (us and the children). Then after the picture everybody left and we had lunch. We had beans, rice, tortillas and vegetables. Then we cleaned up after the kid’s and said good bye to Alma Rosa.
By this time we were all in desperate need of showers, but the hoger had run out of water. Water is a big issue for those who live in the desert, and especially for those in Nogales , Sonora , Mexico (where we were) because they don’t have water piped to their homes—they have tanks that get filled when they can afford to fill them. Needless to say, all of us were dirty and smellyJ, but it was a good reality check.
We then went to a place called Grupos Beta. They explained how they find immigrants (or the border patrol brings them there) and if they need food or medical care they provide it. They explained how long Groups Beta’s been there (18 years) and how long the workers worked there. After that we took off and did some shopping. Most of us like Nathaniel and I got shirts and bracelets. Then we set of to Arizona back to Borderlinks we had some dinner (pizza and salad J) and talked about how tomorrow will be. We are all reeeealllly tired and headed to bed…it’s only 9:30 .
We’ll see you tomorrow!
