CONGREGATIONAL EVENTS

How is our social life? That is the question Congregational Life Committee asks itself each day. How are our new members doing in this church community? How are  our members and friends getting to know one another? Is everyone finding their niche and getting to know one another? Through several special events each year, members and friends of all ages have the opportunity to gather for fun. For example:

·     Mardi Gras Party on “Fat Tuesday”

· Pentecost Picnic in late Spring at a  park

From time to time special events from various groups are part of the calendar. Major speakers come for retreats, workshops, classes, and worship; people like J. Barrie Shepherd, Ann Weems, Bob Bohl, and community leaders like Dr. Gene Harris and Janet Jackson. The harvest Bazaar and Spring Yard Sale by the Presbyterian Women bring us together. Holiday events include the Advent Celebration, Children’s Pageant and Spaghetti Dinner. Every age group and church group gets in on the action.

NEW MEMBER CLASSES

Classes for those considering membership at Broad Street are offered four times per year. This time with the pastors gives participants a chance to learn and ask questions about Presbyterianism and this church. Contact one of the pastors or the church office if you are interested in joining this family of faith.

PLENTY OF SMALL GROUPS

Dine with Nine is a program of small dinner groups. Each September and February everyone is invited to sign up for “Dine with Nine” and come to a potluck at the church. Each participant is assigned to a group of about nine people—single and married. Each group sets its own schedule for monthly dinners during the next four months. The groups are re-formed in February so that more people may sign up, and more people can meet one another. Dine with Nine is one of the best ways to get to know people at Broad Street.

Pizza & Prose is a once a month get together to eat, share one another's company and discuss the book of the month.  The group meets on a Friday evening starting with pizza at 6:00p.m. and the book discussion at 7.  Members take turns hosting the group in their homes.

Broad Street Bike Group calls upon everyone who loves bicycling to join them Saturdays during the summer. let interested folks know where they will bike, how long, and where the various starting points are. They choose rides where people can ride five or ten miles or forty! Food and fellowship is always a part of this fun group, and all ages are welcome. The trick is to get on mailing list! Call the church office for information.

KITCHEN COMMITTEE AND CREW

Led by Amy Forrest, Kitchen Coordinator, these many people plan, prepare and serve meals for special gatherings at the church. Everyone is invited to sign up for the set up, prep, cooking, or clean up crews. This activity is as much about fellowship as it is about meals! Sign up by calling Bill Kelley at 221-6552.

THE FESTIVAL OF FAITH AND WRITING, CALVIN COLLEGE

In even-numbered years, a group ventures to Grand Rapids for this festival of excellent writers. We stay from Wednesday to Saturday or Sunday and attend their lectures, workshops, discussion, plays and worship. Great poets, novelists, and playwrights of the Judeo-Christian world are guests.

SUMMER TIME!

Enjoy three “Jazz in the Garden” concerts, held in June and July in the church’s Memorial Garden. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, a picnic supper and listen to some of Columbus’ best jazz musicians with our neighbors and friends.

FAMILY MINISTRIES

Families come in many shapes and sizes. Broad Street families gather regularly for fun and learning, for social and service opportunities. Sometimes it’s Movie Night for families, sometimes it’s a service project like Angel Tree, sometimes it’s the Family Retreat, to name a few. Watch the Broadstreeter and    bulletin for events for the whole family, no matter what shape or size.

THE DEACONS AND CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

The Board of Deacons hosts a number of congregational events throughout the year. A light meal after World Communion in October and the Christmas Eve Wassail Hour following both Christmas Eve worship services, “College Connection” a mail ministry of food and support encourages college students who are away form home, are examples. Deacons offer care to the whole church checking in with members and friends during good times and bad. To find out who your Deacon is, call the church office.

SPONTANEOUS POSSIBILITIES

From time to time an interest emerges, plans are made, and a social event or group is put forth by the Congregational Life Committee or by members of the church. Examples have been: a golf outing, a night at the theatre,     singles’ gatherings, the new young adult group, or Elastic Bands. Some are for one event, and some become ongoing groups. The Committee welcomes and applauds your requests and desire to start a group or plan events. They will help you with start up funds and publicity.

SO, HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

Please speak to a pastor or call the church office at 221-6552. A booklet entitled the “Time and Talent Reference Guide” is available to help. It lists each activity and committee, gives a brief description and contact person.

Be a part of Christ’s community in action!
