Volunteer

Broad Street Afterschool Volunteers

When: Monday-Thursday, 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Requirements: Must pass a criminal background check and complete a volunteer application form. You can be in high school but must have a 3.5 or higher GPA in order to volunteer. We can serve as a volunteer or service learning site if you are required to complete volunteer hours for a college course or completion of high school requirements.
Description: If you love working with children and want to make a difference in a child’s life this volunteer opportunity is for you!!   You will assist children from kindergarten to 12th grade with their homework as well as specific enrichment activities in reading and math.  If you have a creative side you can also design games and activities to help children understand math concepts such as fractions.  The kids also cook a community meal once a month in collaboration with the BSPC Food Pantry and Junior League volunteers.

Broad Street Volunteer Gatekeepers

When: Monday-Friday, 3-4 hour shifts.
Requirements: Enjoys greeting people in a friendly manner and helping visitors with information, directions, etc.
Description: Volunteer Gatekeepers assist in the church business office by answering telephones, greeting church visitors, sharing information, and helping with small office tasks. Training is provided.

COMPASS Meeting Mentors

When: 1st or 3rd Thursday
Description: COMPASS is seeking subject experts or almost experts to serve as a meeting mentor at its Hand Up class on the first and third Thursday of the Month.  Meeting Mentors lead the class in discussion and provide pertinent information a topic of their choice. The goal of the Hand Up program is to prevent Homelessness through self -sufficiency programs and activities. The Thursday meeting is called our Opportunity Class, and we talk about subjects ranging from financial management to success thinking. We are in need of someone who knows what to look for in a used car, to help program participants know what to look for so they won’t purchase a lemon. It is only a one meeting mentorship obligation and the participants are eager to learn.

COMPASS Volunteer

When: Mondays- Wednesdays, 2 hour shifts
Requirements: Compassionate, Great listener and ability to fill out computerized application.
Description: Compass is seeking volunteers to work as a member of the team to prevent homelessness. Volunteers will serve as information and referral specialist helping COMPASS customers to navigate away from homelessness. Pathfinders fully assess individual situations, search resources data base and other community sources to determine what solutions may be available. Pathfinders help people make the web of health and human services program less complicated for better outcomes.  Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts Monday-Wednesday and all volunteers will receive training from COMPASS staff.

Food Pantry Shopping Volunteer

When: Various Hours
Requirements: Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Children ages 6-12 must be accompanied by an adult. Youth ages 13-17 must have a signed permission slip.
Description: Assist clients as they shop our choice pantry – help them select from available items, enforcing limits as necessary, offering suggestions for recipes and ways to use new foods.  Work one on one with the clients as they shop and assist them to their vehicle.   Assist with set up, clean up and stock work as needed.  Enjoy meeting our neighbors and hearing their stories.

Nutrition Educator

When: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m..; Thursdays, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Requirements: Background in nutrition helpful but not required; all materials provided. Should be comfortable presenting to groups, working with a range of ages.
Description: Nutrition education is an important part of helping our clients lead healthier lives.  Lead Tasty Bites nutrition demonstrations and sampling during Pantry hours.  Teach Rainbow for Health produce lessons to the Broad Street Afterschool students; assist BSA students as they prepare meals for family and friends.  Assist with Market Sprouts children’s activities at Farm Markets.

Third Thursday Legal Clinic Attorney

When: Third Thursday every month (5:30-7:30 p.m.) except for December
Requirements: Must have a license to practice law in Ohio
Description: Attorneys will primarily offer brief legal advice to indigent clients, many of whom have been referred by the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, which sponsors the clinic in conjunction with BSPC.
